"For ‘First Signs’, Halliday has expanded his oeuvre to encompass rich, soundtrack-worthy compositions. In turn he is becoming more like West Yorkshire’s Ry Cooder rather than the next Vini Reilly."

"While it's not uncommon to see a band base a track off the interplay between acoustic guitar and violin (The Album Leaf comes to mind), sadly there are very few bands which utilize this approach in a majority of their music. The acoustic guitar has something magical about it; it’s able to create a very different and distinct tone, and the organic nature makes it very approachable and natural to our ears. Listeners looking for a new instrumental flavor should check out Pictureville - it's almost picture perfect!"

"Motodestra is the alias of one-man band Daniel Halliday, who on his debut creates an album in the spirit (and to an extent, the sound) of another group-alias-represents-core-person act, the Durutti Column. Vini Reilly's careful explorations in gentle electric guitar and rhythm make for a more interesting template than some, thankfully, and so on the nine-song, all-instrumental effort Motodestra's work comes off as engaging, contemplative fare"

"Without so much as an average track on the record, this is lush, hypnotic music deserving of a much wider audience." (included in Best of 2005 list) Leonard's Lair More...
"Like Durutti Column meets Deebank whilst gazing out at July Skies, this is an album of elegant instrumental charm. Quietly substantial."

"At this point I'd don't recall who pointed me towards this album, but I wrote to the "band" (re- Dan Halliday) and he agreed to send me a copy even though I seemed to get a self effacing vibe about it from him, as if it was old news to him already. Well, he's English and they're always depressed about something so I told him to buck up, it's new to all of us who haven't heard it yet..."
